marlin 925, marlin 25
$150 with synthetic stock, dunno how much wood stock would cost.
I got a marlin 925 as my first gun shortly after i turned 18. My budget was $200, which doesn't give me much choice because all guns cost more in California. I settled on a 925 because
a- it fits the budget
b- recommendations by store employees & online
c- its a bolt action
It turns out its very accurate, consistent, reliable, simple rifle. everything a man needs in his first gun.
about a year after i bought it i got a scope, Barska 4x32mm. later a Centerpoint 4-16x40mm,and finally a Barska 6-24x44mm. Barska sells good scopes with the quality of high end scopes such as Bushnell or Nikon with a low end price. Its a good deal when you don't have 100s to dish out for a scope and you don't want to spend more on the scope than your gun.
I believe the wood-stocked Marlin 925 starts at $189 or $199. the wood stock as a part costs about $30, so the wood stock version should be only $30 more than the polymer stocked version I have.
My rifle now 5 years old and over 2000 rounds fired, is still like new and works well. I've practiced until I can hit a target from 350 meters away with the scope. at close ranges its a low-cost tack-driver at 25 & 50 meters. still under 1" groups at 100m.
the two things that irk me about the rifle-
the iron sights are cheap & basic, and rear sight isn't graduated in anything, quite difficult to figure out what elevation setting is what.
plastic internals could break, plastic gets more brittle over time. being a hobby gunsmith if it broke its not a big deal, I just don't like plastic much (stock ok).
