How to introduce my new kitten to my dog ?

Hi I got a new male kitten (10 weeks old) a week ago and I wanted to introduce him to my border collie (4 years old) . Firstly I let my border collie smell the blanket the kitten has been on and I have let the kitten smell my border collie's blanket aswell. So i let the kitten approach my border collie (while I had my border collie on the lead , just in case) and the kitten walked up to him with his back arched up , the hair on his back and tail was standing up and started to hiss in front of him and tried to jump in front of his face. Thankfully my sister took away the kitten without it causing any more problems. Why did he do this ? They have both been around cats and dogs by their previous owners , my border collie didnt do anything just sat there watching.
Did I do anything wrong ?
