How should I introduce my VERY terrritorial cat to my new kitten?

My cat is 10 yrs and my family has had her since she was weeks old, she is my sisters cat and will walk the perimeter of our house every morning and night to make sure there isn't anything on our property. This Christmas my parents got me a male half maine coon kitten. he is very sweet. so far we have kept him in my room for a week. he is starting to smell more like the house. But what i want to know is how should i let the see each other for the first time. Do i just put them both in the same room or what do i do? help i don't want to get rid of him like the other ones i had to....
BTW: The only reason we had to get rid of the other cats is because we did not introduce them the right way and there for our cat is very mad. AND our old cat is a tortoise shell and is always cranky and i don't think ever really liked me only my mom.... thank you. I would appreciate it if you weren't mean about it.
