How should I introduce my 2 year old dog to a newborn?

I'm due to have a little boy very soon, and we have a 100lb, 2 year old dog at home. He's a little territorial, especially around the home, but well behaved for the most part and we've had him in obedience classes. He loves my 5 year old daughter, but he grew up around her as a pup. I really want the transition to go as smoothly as possible...any tips?

The scent thing is a very good idea. Let the dog slowly learn the baby's scent. If he's been through obedience classes, sit him next to you and the baby, let him sniff the baby and maybe (once the baby is a little older and has a better immune system) take his hand and pet the dog with it. Make sure to give the dog positive reinforcement for being a good boy with the baby. Tell him "good" or whatever your happy word for him is while touching the baby to him and he'll make the connection.

Hey, i just had a baby 7 weeks ago and we have 2 staffies. When i was in hospital, my hubby took home the wrap our baby had around him the first night. He let then sniff it and sleep with it. Once we got home, they had the smell of the baby and were both excited to meet him. They are both very protective of him now and one sleep beside him on his play mat.
