How many massages in a day?

On average, what is the most chair massages you should do in a day? I am doing chair massage at our local fair this weekend and didn't have a clue I'd be this busy. Went from doing 10 a day last year to 25 this year and turning ppl away so I could leave and crash. I must be getting old and it's later than I think. lol

Seriously, how many do ppl usually do in a day's time?

I think it depends on how long they are, how long the day is, how many breaks you take, and your overall general stamina. I just completed about 85 in the last three days. Four days of teaser 5-7 minute, which was the great majority and one day of 20 minute. The days where 3-6 hours long.I was pretty tired last night but with a day or two of rest it should be fine for me. I would not want to do that to often but once a month or so seems to agree with me. I do a lot of chair work and in general find 3 15 minute an hour for a couple hours and then a 15-20 min break, with a couple more hours of the same is very doable. Listen to your body and don't feel bad for turning em away. You can do what you can do.

My DH is at an event today where he will be doing chair massage (closer to the 15-20 minute sessions, we were told) from 8 am to 5 pm. I know that he takes care to use proper body mechanics, and he is used to "working on the vertical" since he also massages horses. I know he will be tired when he gets home, though, and we are glad that he has the next two days off!

Last Saturday we went to a different event, where he did roughly 25-30 short "teasers" in roughly 5 hours. I had to go "rescue" him so he could go to the bathroom and eat some lunch!

Watch your body mechanics- that can't be stressed enough! And make sure you're drinking plenty of water!

If you are doing this "for yourself" (not working on the clock for someone else, ad my DH is today), you can take a small break in between clients- take your time cleaning the chair and take a drink of water before getting the next person onto the chair. That's how he did it last Saturday (until I went and wrote "BREAK FOR THERAPIST" in two slots on his sing-in sheet).

I am curious about offering chair massage at the fair. This year when I went to the fair I wondered if it would be worth looking into for next year. At our fair no-one was offering it. Sounds like you were busy enough to make it worth it? Did you offer 15 minute sessions or how did you package it? The biggest thing I was looking for in setting up at the fair was the advertising opportunity. Have you found this to be your experience, getting business after the fair from being visible?

Also where were you located, in a barn/building or out in the fairgrounds in your own booth/ tent? I am considering it for next year, although I am under the impression that it is very costly to rent a spot. I am considering talking to another MT friend to see if we might want to split it, we live in different towns /area’s so, I thought it might work. I haven’t called to see what the cost is yet; I just assumed it would be very high. I just went to the fair last week end and was thinking about it!

Any input you could share would be appreciated. It sounds like it was worth your time. I am sorry that you were over worked though. Do you think spliting with another MT is a good idea?

Mostly 10 min ones, with about 5, 20 min ones. Wed I did 11 and it was Louisiana syle hot & humid. I left at 4:00 because I was literally drained. It turned cool Thursday...did 25, Friday 26, today 21 because I was determined to close by 4. I've learned one thing for sure...it's hard to get away because ppl are begging you to do one more. I turned down at least 5 the last three nights. One lady was so funny. I told her I had to go because my husband had turned in his to-go order an hour ago and I knew he was starving. She said, "Well tell him to come get his own food. I have fibromyalgia and need a massage". lol I encouraged her to come back the next day.

I had an ice chest with water and drank plenty of water. I only took one 'good' break though at lunch time and put a sign up for a 30 min lunch break. The first time I did that when I returned from lunch with my big chunk of fudge in tow, looking so forward to eating it, there were 2 ppl waiting for me already. I kept looking over at it, but didn't get to eat it until 7 that night. The next day I ate everything I wanted before I came back to work. I'm a little slow but I get it eventually. lol

Do it! lol Last year I rented the same booth (less than $400) and had a friend help me. The booth is very small and we barely had room to maneuver. It is in the commercial building where many vendors are set up as ppl walk thru making a circle viewing everything. It is a metal building with only a ventilation fan and is burning hot when our fall weather takes its time getting here. I had a portable a/c this year that came in on Thursday which made it much better. I didn't want to fool with 5's for change so I just set it for $10 for 10 min or they could go $20 for 20 min. As long as I had someone IN my chair, ppl stopped and signed up. So, during any lulls, when I spotted someone I knew, I pulled them in for a freebie. It works like a charm.

The person who helped me last year wasn't available this year and my son, who recently graduated is in massage school now, so he will be helping me next year I get very good feedback from this...it's GREAT exposure and I also used business card magnets with the football schedules on them so hopefully they will go on their refrigerator and not be discarded for a while. Houseofmagnets.com had a very good fall special. I also do a drawing for free massages and bath salts and other services from the Salon where I rent my room. My chair massage intake sheets are used for a separate drawing so they have a better chance at winning. Those who returned to me got their name entered yet again. The entire Salon will get more customers from the exposure from this, but I will probably get the most, cuz massage is the bestest. :grin:

So, Sandra, are you doing the fair again this year? How big *is* the booth space you get for "less than $400"? And from that price you mentioned, I take it that a 10' x 10' space for $250 is a "good deal"? :grin:

We need to block off a 10' x 10' space on our floor with masking tape and practice how we can set up our two chairs with table and "stuff we need/use". Currently we use a much narrower but longer space, in the office. I can see quite a bit of chair massage marketing in our future.....

When I have done event work with the chair I have been know to work for 10 hr. Chair massage is a lot easier on me than doing a table massage. And I enjoy people watching and that makes the time go by a lot faster

We have a tall plant stand (the top is a woven basket) set between us where we clip our timers to the edge. The basket holds our cleaner, chair covers, bandaids, and such. We have a long table set up in front of us that holds our marketing materials, a box for free prize drawings, chair massage intake forms & a sign in sheet.

I am counting on getting a booth this year and crossing my fingers one becomes available for me. My son and I are going out on our own in June so the owner where I work now will be getting the booth where I've been working. And I think the money I spend on the booth is a good deal. I more than pay for it with the massages I do plus the exposure to thousands of ppl. It's a huge fair. I even told the man in charge of the booth rental that I'd take a booth double that size (which is double the money) if that's all he has available. The exposure and the amount of ppl who sit in our chairs will be well worth it...
