I'm writing a modern day fantasy which makes use of concepts my readers are not going to have heard of before that are central to understanding the story. The trouble is, I have to find a way to introduce these concepts so that my readers can let them wrap around their minds over time, instead of forcing it on them in one place. The "show, don't tell" principle is too gradual in this case too. It's like I'm Tolkien explaining what a Hobbit is, or Wells explaining time travel. Any ideas?
P.S. One of my big problems is that my main characters are already familiar with the concepts, so I cant have some other character explain it to them.
