Help! Quick! Hot Stone Roaster Question

I'm taking the 18 quart turkey roaster out of the box. It has a separate cooking pan that fits down inside. It says to always use this when you cook, but do I need it for stones too? It'd be easier to clean it with it in but is that the way it's done with stones for keeping the temperature OK?

Think of the turkey roaster as a mini oven. Think of the liner as the oven "rack".

Yeah, it needs to be there. I didn't use it at first and realized that was a big mistake when I wanted to dump out all the water!!!

Big mess... and I ended up scratching the bottom of the roaster... ouch!!!

Also, a big hint is to put a white hand towel at the bottom so that you can see the stones, and it doesn't get scratched. I learned that too late...

Well, originally my first post wasn't supposed to go thru twice but it came out nicely placed anyway! LOL!

Yes, I did know about the towel and it definitely needed to be there.

My guinea pig... I mean my husband is now snoring away. He'd had a long stressful day and I think the stones and the massage just melted him into a big puddle.

I found the stones very much easier to adapt to than I thought I would. They didn't feel nearly as awkward as I expected.
