Hard drive newbie needs answers plzzzz!!!!?

I have a hard drive that my son gave me with tons of movies loaded on it.
The problem was not installing the H.D to my computer, it's when I try to view a movie i get an error screen that says "adobe reader could not open "the movie" because it's not a supported file type, or the file may have been damaged by being sent as an email and may not have been decoded.
I know the email thing is not correct, so my guess is it's not a supported file which is mp4.
So what do i do? please help.
