This event was such a big waste of my time it is not even funny. No one wanted to pay for a 15 min. chair massage. They all wanted it for free t013 . I made $10 in 8 hrs. I was so post to be there for 2 days, but I did not go back on the second day because it was going to be the same crowd. I am so glad I did not pay to rent a booth.

I have a friend and fellow MT who goes to Contra Dances. I don't know exactly what they're like... but I think the dancing is pretty "intense"... I know whenever we trade after she's been Contra Dancing, she always needs an extra long DT session.
I just thought if you enjoy watching these sorts of things, you might offer coupons for 15 minutes free with the purchase of an hour. Or Something to that effect... so that they call you Afterwards.

Think of it as sports massage... you want to get massage during your training but probably nothing more than swedish immediately before an event. But afterward you sure could use someone to help your muscles recover from the intense work out you gave them.
It could be that the dancers in the competition were reluctant to do something in the middle of their competition.

I think if you have a love of dance, you might be able to market yourself to dancers. But each type of dance is probably going to bring up different areas to target.

Most of these people where from out of town. And there where plenty of people watching the Dancer's to have kept me busy. This was by far the worst event I have ever done. It was a mostly senior crowd 60 - 80. And they where just not massage people

Awww, I'm sorry it didn't work out well for you. But at least you didn't have to pay to be there, as you said. I am learning that some events that we think won't be worth our time, turn out to be fantastic, and others that we are just sure will be wonderful, end up disasters. That's how life is. Just joined so bumping this post up. JLW if I were you Id aim for bellydance related events. They inevitably have souks which means you are beside the people selling the pretties and so everyone is in a good mood. Also go for the ones with workshops rather than competitions, the dancers tend to over commit to the number of workshops they take and end up with aching bodies as a result

Don't be discouraged! Learn from what didn't go well and move forward from there. We all fall before we fly!

(PS, never think that a crowd "isn't a massage crowd", every crowd is a massage crowd! Think positively and strive to make people away that you want to help make them feel better, that mind frame can go a long way!)

Many people at dance events need lower body attention, and may not see a chair massage as helpful. ("Isn't that just for the shoulders?" :roll: ) I have considered taking a table to a dance event, with a focus on positional release and AIS rather than massage. Instead of helping them relax, I'd focus on pain relief, faster recovery, performance enhancement, and especially client education. If someone actually turned an ankle or suffered a mild strain, I'd be all over it - and probably have them back in action before long. With enough advance notice, I might even talk the event organizers into giving me a chance to present on injury prevention and the dance-specific benefits of therapeutic massage. It would be especially fun to demonstrate pain relief on audience volunteers, with a goal of giving significant relief within a 2 minute window.
