Fractionated Coconut oil. Odor..

Last year I bought 8 oz of FCO at a massage supply pump station. As soon as I tried it at home I noticed a foul smell. I didn't know where it was coming from at first. The oil had no smell when I put my nose to the bottle. Once on my skin, I smelled kind of like rancid oil. I just couldn't use it. I thought maybe it was just a bad batch or something. Last week I decided to try it again. I ordered a gallon of Solace light fractionated coconut oil. They add a small amount of organic jojoba also. I like jojoba and the faint smokey smell is just fine. Anyways, the Solace FCO came in the mail today and as soon as I tried some on my skin I had the same rancid type smell that just bugs the hell out of me. I couldn't find anything on the web about anyone else having the same issue. It's supposed to be odorless. It just smells awful to me. Is it just the way it reacts with my skin or something? Doesn't like my body chemistry? Anyone else have this issue? I wonder if I can return it? Ordered it from Gotyourback.com

Do you find you normally have a good sense of smell? My sense of smell is very fine and I also think that coconut oil can have a rancid-ish odor sometimes. In my case, there is no such thing as unscented b/c I can smell a scent on most anything.

I have also experienced this.
I had purchased a jar of NSI Coconut oil - not fractionated it was extra virgin - this is food grade and I had purchased for consumption.
When I stir-fried some pea pods I noticed the smell immediately and the flavor was off. I did not notice any smell from the jar and I have used it to add to my body cream it small batches.
My next jar was from Jarrow's and I did not have that problem. Smell and flavor seemed fine.
I keep the jars in the refrigerator.

I don't really know what "fractionated" means - maybe it is a way of processing.

Anyway - I think that coconut oil may have a short shelf life and that you just need to find a brand that you trust and is fresh. Jojoba lasts forever - but I don't know if it would help the stability of the coconut oil.

I have a pretty good sense of smell but I don't think that's the problem in this case. I have no problem with the natural smells of any other oil. I was looking forward to using the FCO mixed with my Jojoba. Both feel good, although I'm not a fan of 100% jojoba fell wise, don't have a problem washing out of sheets and are very good for the skin.

I've had various oils that I've ordered from companies be rancid by the time they get to me. I use mostly cream, but anytime I need to buy oil now I get it from the local health food store. More expensive, but it's worth it to be able to take it back & get it replaced right away if something's wrong (which I haven't had happen yet.)
Is this the first time you've used coconut oil? Maybe it is just your body chemistry. Try contacting the company to ask about their return policy.
