Its more daunting for the partner, they REALLY don't want to make a fool of themselves. I suggest an informal night, going down the pub for a few drinks, or just a regular meal around one of your houses. Try not to make it the BIG HUGE occasion, normally if they think your serious about the guy/girl the parents are just as nervous. They don't want to wreck what could be a good thing. Questions should be kept light, not politics or something that could start an argument. Hopefully you would have been dating a while so they will know general info about each other from your conversations (if not start talking now). I met my wife's parents down the pub one friday night after work. It gets hard when you have to ask for their blessing to get married.
