DMSO Opinions and research?

I am curious. Anybody use DMSO? There is a lot of conflicting information out there. I would never use it on a client but am trying it myself as we speak. Terrible taste. I heard of folks using aspercream or liquid Glucosamine. Anybody have pratical experience or trusted research? ~peter

What are you using it for? I have heard about topical applications, but am unfamiliar with ingestion of DMSO.

Not ingesting by mouth, topical only. I am using it for some chronic inflammation. Lateral Epicondalitus. Only 1 or 2 applications to get the inflammation turned around. That and ice. We had a nice tincture with Emu oil a few years ago, Profascia, which was great for fascial adhesions and inflammation.... I believe they went out of business. Emu oil is compared to DMSO and I got a small quantity to try from a professional friend.
I realize one should not take it casually as it's a vehicle into the blood stream. One of the side effects is bad breath, garlic and oysters for 6 hrs or so. Leaves a funky taste in your mouth.
I always heard of it used in the sports arena for acute pain and inflammation. Mixed with aspercream. Not FDA approved and controversial.

OK...follow up post. I treated my forarm (lateral epicondylitis) twice with the DMSO. First time just by itself and it did lesson the pain but I had an intuitive sense it was just masking the pain. The second application was with Aspercream to carry the Aspercream deeper into the site. I decided to work the tissue a little... not much at all, some stripping towards the condyle. Nothing tha would normally make me or a client sore. That night I could not even straighten my elbow with a good amount of low level soreness. Enough it cut into my sleep. The next day the pain was much worse and stiffer.

Reading on the internet DMSO is known to help arthritis and acute injuries. I used it on a cronic condition with negative results. I don't get it, why it made my pain response so much more sensitive to movement but it did.

Bottom line is i used it to reduce inflammation and the inflammation increased for me, maybe because the stripping......DMSO is out for me. Maybe good for masking pain and joint pathologies but I didn't get what I would call healing or improvement..... only masking. Which is not what is claimed and you should not take my one experience as truth or proof. YMMV

One possible explaination is the DMSO broke down fascial cross binding and the little stripping broke more binding and the inflammation was the result of that. My arm does not feel free in movement though....only deeply sore.

PS..... I much prefer very high refinements of Emu oil with anti inflammatory hearbal tinctures. Like Profascia.

DMSO vs PROFASCIA

Saw the questions about DMSO and noticed you had contact with Profascia in the past. WE HAVE PROFASCIA. The business that you speak about ? possibly going out of business ? More info would be helpful as to where you came into contact with Profascia, maybe we can fill in some gaps. However, we do have some on order as we speak, it should arrive mid to late June. Let us know if you want some. As for DMSO...a lot of cause for concerns...........do your research first. As for us, we use Profascia for everything....its clean, ethical, all natural and safe for internal or external use. We have lots of testimonies we can share and we use it in our Massage business. I know of a world champion athlete that advocates the use of DMSO for topical application in areas where there is a buildup of scar tissue. He felt that it really helped areas where he had suffered old injuries/surgeries to open up, though it is unclear what else (besides exercise) he used to facilitate the process. Now I've seen a number of strength athletes that enjoy his fitness protocols take up DMSO as a training aid, with mixed results. Most do not do their homework, and take unnecessary risks.

DMSO was originally used for veterinary treatment of large animals that didn't like needles. It helps foreign substances pass through dermal layers and enter the bloodstream, so it is very effective at delivering medications (or other chemical substances) without breaking the skin. It is also supposed to help break down collagen fibers and/or disrupt how they bind... therefore making it useful in treating scar tissue/fascial adhesions. However, it comes with risks, and should not be used lightly or at all carelessly.

That's my understanding Jason. There is a possibility the DMSO broke down some fascial binding and a few strips broke apart a lot more. I didn't feel the DOMs till the next day. I didn't think I was aggressive but the inflammation says different. No other explaination of the results.

If this is the same Profascia I used before, it is safer and more predictable.
I'll review back... DMSO seems to be a bad idea for now. Especially when there are effective alternatives at hand.

Ah... now that makes sense and seems valid. The pain I was experiencing was different than the original Lateral Epi pain. Felt more joint...possibly ligament tissue or joint capsule. Thanks for the back and forth.

Have used dmso for pain relief when walking with broken toes back in the day when I helped train standardbred race horses for a living. Yep, it tastes horrid, gives you foul breath, but, darned if it doesn't take down the inflammation and the pain pdq. The vet that taught me how to use it on myself cautioned me about using it to excess [with the taste and smell there's darned little chance of that] because it can have a bad effect on the liver.

Using DMSO

DMSO has been used in veterinary practices for at least 30 years that I personally know of. Used to use it on injured racehorses when I worked at a lay-up track, and my vet used it a few years ago on a dog of mine that had gotten kicked in the head(chasing a horse). Works great on inflammation. However, the thing all the vets emphasized was NEVER mix DMSO with anything you don't want in the bloodstream. That includes dirt, oil, hand lotion, etc. DMSO is a very powerful solvent that takes EVERYTHING through the skin with it. So the problem with mixing Aspercream or anything else with it is all those 'other ingredients' that you are inadvertently sending into your skin. Preservatives, fillers, mediums like petroleatum, etc. could conceivably cause more problems than the 'active ingredients' can fix. When the vet mixes something with DMSO, it is as pure as possible, many times it is an injectable drug. So if it's not something you would inject into a vein, I would be very wary about using it with DMSO. I have used pure DMSO on myself many times, and have found that, on me, at least, that it works better on active inflammation than on chronic pain. Don't look for it to ever be approved for human use, there are some side effects besides the funky taste, and, since it was discovered as a by-product of the paper industry(according to the info I've read), the big drug companies can't patent it and charge big bucks for it. Hope this helps anyone considering using it.
