Courses in Pregnancy massage

Hi all,

I am really interested in learning more about massaging ladies during pregnancy, and postnatally. I have been on a few seminars, and I feel drawn to this sort of work.

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of a good reputable course?! Either one they have attended, or one they know to be good. I have looked at a few websites, but it is very difficult to know which ones are really worth the money, and leave you with not only a thorough knowledge of the subject, but a recognised diploma of some kind.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and feel finally ready to pursue it!

Hi I would also like any advice on any reputable courses out there. I've looked at various sites too but it's so difficult to choose one above the other. They all seem to be in London too and I would prefer one North/Midlands area if anybody knows of a good one there. Thanks

Tj, Bexx, I attended a course run by Suzanne Yates on Massage for Pregnancy - excellent and detailed (4 days), plus a qualification from the APNT. It is a post grad course designed for qualified therapists. I would recommend it highly. She also does courses for Midwives and Shiatsu practitioners, and has a good textbook Shiatsu for Midwives which is worth reading.

My only comment is that because Suzanne is a Shiatsu practitioner there is a bias towards Shiatsu techniques - which in fact is not a bad this as it gives you some more skills.

There must be other courses out there - but this is the one I took and found very valuable

This was one of the courses I was interested in. I had noticed that it had a bias towards Shiatsu, but as you said, it gives you something new to try.

Has anyone tried any of the Jing Massage courses? They run pregnancy massage courses, and I was impressed with their stand at the conference in Donnington on sunday.

thanks intouch I have seen this one before too. It looks a great course although they don't seem to be doing any near me at present. Will contact them and see if they have any planned.

tj - I too thought that the jing stand was great on Sunday. Great demonstrations. I enquired about their pregnany massage courses too and they seem to do them around the country which is an added bonus. hopefully they will be sending some details through to me.

I am a new member also looking for Pregnancy Massage training. I can highly recommend any of Jing's training course - I have done tons of them and have never found any other training like it. It's just that I have a long queue of people waiting for pregnancy masage and need to get qualified soon. If you let me know where you are based (I am in Nottingham) I will talk to Jing about coming up and running a course at my clinic. No promises but it could work - especially if you have any colleagues who would like to join in.

I live in North Bedford, so Nottingham would be great for me! I also have a sister who lives in Nottingham, so I could stay the nights there.

I dont know any one who would like to do this course to bump up the numbers, but I too would like to do it sooner rather than later. I have been intouch with Well mother several times,but have had no reply.

Count me in if you organise anything!

They sent me througha list of next year's courses, and there is one in April, which seems a long way off, but I guess it is better than nothing!

I only received my brochure the other day. I am in two minds what to do really. I don't want to put a deposit on the Brighton one if there is the possibility of there being one in Nottingham, as that is so much more convenient.

If you don't receive it soon, let me know and I can pass on the details to you if you like.

I finally had some info back from Wellmother, and they are running a course at the end of November, and have one space on it, but it is over a few days I cant make unfortunately. You could always try going for that one.

Let me know if you dont hear from jing, and I'll let you know the dates.

Yes the Jing courses are in Falmer (just north of Brighton). I've been on three Jing courses (although not their pregnancy one) and I would definitely recommend them.

I've found the Barnes method of Myofascial Release to be extremely effective with pregnant clients who are suffering from low back pain. Are there any other techniques / modalities that people are using that they are finding to be particularly effective? Please share.

I travelled everyday because there is a fast train service from Croydon to Brighton. But when you get your joining instructions from Jing, they will give you details of some places to stay in Brighton which have been recommended by previous students: quite a few of the students come from north of London and stay in accommodation in Brighton. If you email Rachel and Meg at Jing, they can pass your details on to other students who have stayed overnight.

Thanks tj, I went on to thejing website but their courses are in Brighton and at the moment it's just not feasible for me to get down there during the week (young children). Just had a look at the expectancy website that aromababe mentioned. I might give them a ring. In the meantime, I have booked myself onto a maternity reflexology course which is something that I also want to do. Unfortunately it's not until next year. In the meantime, I think I will keep on looking for pregnancy massage courses!! I went on a cay course yesterday for massage and some of the techniques we learnt could be applied to a pregnant lady. I suppose some of it is just confidence isn't it? How best to position them, what not to do etc. The course yesterday though did give me food for thought.
