"Coherent" massage

So last night in class, my instructor said, "Oh, that's right, you are an experienced bodyworker, that's why your massage is so coherent."

Thanks for the compliment (?), but does anyone know what a coherent massage is?

Sounds like there is plenty more time for them to expound upon the myriad "physical aspects" of the work. There is the skin, the connective tissues, the musculature, the lymph system, blood circulation, and all those nerves running everything... one semester hardly seems enough time to scratch the surface of all that!

You both are on the same track, which is a nice feeling.

I had a bit of a brainstorm last night about doing the work with more intention, especially energetically. I am learning energetic meridian and chakra work from another teacher and my aha! was that I can fuse the two modalities and bring a new level to my shiatsu work.

I love doing body work!

Intention. Agreed. When a therapist is paying attention and not just rubby-rubby-ing, you can sure tell the differece. I don't know why some therapists (not you) don't realize that, but many don't.

Seems like you are paying attention, working in a non-random way and the client is obviously noticing.

I have never heard that word used about massage, but it makes perfect sense to me. Frequently a new student's massage will feel very choppy, like they are piecing it together bit by bit. Also there is a lot of randomness involved. "Oh, hey let me rub this spot!" without a real intention. Where the massage of an experienced therapist will feel frequently like a seamless experience.

Usually people will use the word "flow" to describe it, but I think I like the word coherent better. As the definition says "integrated, coordinated, ordered, understandable" Whether or not the session has any "flow," by having these elements of coherency it becomes an enjoyable experience, a joy for the body-mind to integrate.

I can't wait to hear what more articulate people have to say!
