Hey to all,This may be a bit of an unusual topic but I was hoping to find some answers here.I've been practicing reiki on and off for several years, haven't had any attunements but am considering going for them.I've also been doing massage on my wife, nothing technical really. She bought me a hot stone massage kit yesterday and we used it last night. Was great!Anyway, I'm considering pursuing these interests more seriously, and I'm wondering if any christians here practice reiki... or if any christians here DON'T practice reiki because of their beliefs.I guess what I'm asking is, "Should I as a christian avoid performing reiki?"Thanks,Andy

  I am a christian.  I generally don,t refer to myself as one because of the confusion and misunderstanding it causes.  If you say you are a christian, a Baptist assumes you believe the way he does,the Catholic assumes you believe the way he does,and the Methodists, the Episcopalians, the Prebyterians,Jahovas Witness, Holy Rollers, and everyone else who thinks they know the truth.  The point is, when you practice Reiki you can taylor it any way your beliefs allow.   Personally, I don't think it really matters if Moses parted the Red Sea or if Joseph Smith got a couple of tablets from a salamander.  I feel it is important to try and live our lives the way Christ tried to teach us.  That is to love each other by showing kindness and consideration and to be of service when it is called for.  These principles are in no way inconsistant with Reiki.

I am confused to how you can be practing reiki without an attunement. One cannot tap into the flow of Reiki without an attunment from a master. You could be inadvertantly using another method of healing. There are many types of touch healing. You could be using an intuitive touch healing, but it is not Reiki which you are using.

Reiki uses Universal Life force energy which is all around us. It does not deplete the practitioner in any way.

Reiki is not part of any belief system. Some may call it God energy or Goddess energy, but really it is the energy that is all around us. I know Reiki practitioners in all walks of life, and from many religions. There are several people who have written books stating that they believe that Jesus and Buddha used Reiki during their healings.

Reiki does not demand that you think in a particular kind of way, or that you believe in any kind of religion.

By all means, if you are interested in Reiki, follow through, and get an attunement. It is a wonderous process.

Another good book to read, although not centered on Reiki, but healing all systems within the body (emotional, physical, spiritiual, and energy etc.). It is Anatomy of the Spirit by Caroline Myss.

the web sites suggested above are full of information, there is even a page What is Reiki?.  It originated in Japan, and you are trained by a Reiki Master, who "attunes" you to the reiki flow.  It is very relaxing, both giving and receiving.

What is an attunement?

    Luckily, I am both a Christian and a reiki practitioner.  I went through about 1.6 years of discernment from the time that I discovered reiki to the time that I was initiated in it.  My discernment tools included prayer, scripture, and research.  As for scripture, Jesus healed MANY people by laying His hands on them.     There are some Christians that seems to be what I call "overly cautious" and will automatically condemn anything and everything that is not clearly spelled out in the Bible.  However, we have many problems where the Bible does not have clear answers for, largely due to the fact that much of the Bible was written around 2000 years ago.     A friend from my local Catholic charismatic prayer group gave me a test that I can use to see if reiki is of God.  The questions are these:  Does it bring you closer to God?  Does it bring your client closer to God?  If the answer to both questions is "yes", then it probably is of God.  If it brings one of you closer to God, but the other further from God, then you may be treading on iffy ground.  If both of you end up further from God, then it is probably not of Him.  This became my fourth tool of discernment.  Fortunately for me, the answers are YES, it does bring us closer to God (me and the person that I'm working on).  Be aware that the "universal life" IS from God himself!  In fact, when I was initated into reiki, the Holy Spirit was called upon.     Actually, I would be leary of letting a reiki practioner that is not a Christian work on me!  One that is not a Christian could be a snare, since reiki does get into the spiritual realm.     As for "attunements" and such, I also checked some of this out.  One of the attuments that some practioners use is fasting, which is a good quality that some Christians have.     Also stay away from the "new age" crap.  This IS a snare!  I don't even like to fart around with new age music!  Fortunately, I usually don't care for it anyway.     I hope that this helps you out.  If your client is uneasy, you can "invite" him or her into prayer,.     May God's peace be with you always!From John Nozum

Reopening this thread because I have just reread Margaret Lee Lyles' book: "Reiki & You: Awakening the Healer Within!" ("An Ecumenical Guide to Energy Healing")

This is a wonderful resource both for Christians who question whether performing Reiki is appropriate with their belief systems -- and for massage therapists/Reiki practitioners looking for ways to explain Reiki to Christian clients as well those with different belief systems.

Many Christians try to interpret the Bible concerning reiki and other issues, but we don't seem to bother to ask God directly about this. We are so used to making assumptions about what God can and can't do (without even asking HIM) that many non-Christians are taking advaneforum.xxxe of what God has given freely to all humanity and using it while we Christians are in ill health because we're afraid of reiki and delving into something "demonic." Healing is for all, just like the sun shines for all. Just because we as Christians are not instantly healed "supernaturally" or by a medical doctor it doesn't mean that God doesn't want Christians or anyone else to be healed by reiki. We go to non-Christian physicians for healing with medications, etc. don't we? If we really trusted God, we would ask Him about reiki instead of making assumptions based on our fears and denominational tradition. BTW Christians, what is called "universal energyor life force" is actually God's Holy Spirit at work, whether He's acknowledged or not. God loves ALL people and ALL His creations, not just Christians.

I've been very interested in Reiki for awhile but have not really studied that much about it. I think that is a very interesting question about Christianity and Reiki. I think that should be a question you should explore within yourself however. Peoples answers are typically going to be opinions, so I think it is up to you whether you feel it conflicts with your religion or not.

Hi all, Just thought I would put in my 2 cents worth about being a Christian and practicing Reiki. I am not a Reiki practitioner, and have not had any training in it, but I do practice hands on healing. I understand Reiki to be a belief system that believes in Universal energy, and in reincarnation. I, as a Christian, believe, that belief in reincarnation (past lives), diminishes the magnatude of what Jesus did for us by dying on the cross and being raised on the third day. I do on the other hand believe that as energetic creatures, we are energetically connected to our ancestors, and thru that connection, we have the imbalances of our forefathers which we can clear, and change the negative patterns that are set up in families down thru the generations.
Yes, Jesus did laying on of hands, yes Jesus did heal the sick, but it was not (according to the Bible) a Universal energy, or goddess energy it was Jesus as both true God and man. That gift has been given to us by God, and as long as we give Him the glory, He can use us to be the instruments of His healing.

I can't understand how anyone can doubt Reiki as being a gift from God. If God wants us to love our neighbour and to help one another, how better than with Reiki?

Personally, I think it is this kind of thinking that is driving people away from the churches. The churches must realize that Love comes in many forms, not just the ones they endorse.

God is Love... Spread the Love. :
