Chavutti thirmal - massaging with feet and body weight, taking some weight off person by holding onto a red rope suspended from the ceiling. (type-thing)

Does anyone here practice it or have enrolled on the training course?

toying with the idea of doing the course, it is five days and quite expensive, and you wouldn't be able to do the treatment as a mobile therapist, but think it's going to be the next big thing.

Am thinking of organsing the course in Durham in possibly September/October if anyone is interested, can't go down to London to do it as can't get childcare for that length of time.

just reviving the thread to see if anyone knows about it, received a treatment or interested in studying it.

Its featured on the Twinings tea advert with Stephen Fry where he's at a spa and shows a little man leaping manically on someones back........caught my eye!

do you think its too advanced, too weird for the UK?

Hi Daisychain[/align][/align]I quite fancied doing this one myself as it looks quite good, not sure if they teach it the same in the UK as where it comes from, traditionally the recipient is nude and once the body has been lubricated the practitioner sweeps the complete length of the body with their feet, you only use one foot at a time the rope is to help the practitioner maintain their balance during the full bodysweep, the treatment is finished by hand.[/align][/align]One of the good things about it is you don't use a table, it is all done on the floor.[/align]

yes thats the one, although I can't imagine it can be done as a mobile treatment as you need to hang your red rope from somewhere. If I get any more info I'll let you know.

I've received 'chavutti thirumal' from two therapists in London and would thoroughly recommend it. It is a very firm treatment which can really help ease muscular soreness. Fijian massage uses the feet as well, but the therapist sits in a chair and the client remains fully clothed. Seems a bit more practical then Chavutti Thirmal

The main feature of 'chavutti thirumal' is that it involves strokes along the whole length of the body (which is why the client has to be undressed). It is not practical to do these long effleurage-type strokes on a clothed client !
I agree that 'chavutti thirumal' isn't practical for a mobile therapist. In my experience, the closest alternative therapy is the Hawaiian 'lomi lomi', which uses forearms rather than feet, and which has been discussed on four different threads in the massage forum.

btw I wonder whether Daisy might have got more replies if she'd posted this thread under 'massage' rather than 'general therapies'?

Daisy did you get round to learning this and how did you find it? Or has anyone else studied it. I think it will be great for those clients who prefer a very deep massage.

Last year a friend of mine went to Goa to learn how to do it. It was something that I wanted to learn years ago but never quite got round to it. I'm hoping to learn this next year - time and money permitting.

hiya, I 'was' daisy and am now guruholistics.
no, I didn't pursue training because:
1. it is too wacky for 99% of my clients
2. the setting up of the room, ie on the floor with the rope suspended, both my rooms have fixed heavy massage couches which I couldn't shift.

What a shame that your clients were not keen on it and that your therapy room wasn't suitable. I plan on having some sessions with therapists who do this treatment and to find out a bit more about it. I think it will be an amazing treatment to receive and to give - can't wait.

yes, its something that I do fancy doing sometime, but I did a little market research and found that half of the things on my menu, my clients won't try them as they don't know what they are!
I've tried to adjust my marketing to explain what some of these treatments are, but they still aren't as popular as traditional massage and reflexology.

I did get a few to try thai foot and a few have Indonesian massage and love it.

I've just come back from Thailand, where I have been studying Yam Khang Fire Therapy, which is similiar to Chivutti Thirmal as it uses foot pressure and oils. I will have to modify it a bit for western clients.

Guruholistics: I do Indonesian Massage but now call it Deep Tissue Massage. I do get more clients that way.

Yay - I've just finished a two week intensive Chavutti Thirumal course in Lonodn with Helen Noakes.

I can't wait to get my feet on my case studies. It is a totally unique and different way of working. It is difficult to replicate the chavutti movements, pressure and flow using my hands in a normal massage. It now seem strange doing normal massages.

I am very excited about this new skill and hope it brings me loads of new clients.

Is there a website for where you trained?

I use my Yam Khang (oil massage with the feet Northern Thai style) skills if I do a home visit and I'm working with a mat (far more portable than a couch, and I'm fit & flexible for floor work). I use a long wooden pole (as I can't obviously drill a hole in a client's ceiling) as a support. Agree with you about the pressures and techniques.

I know a few people who are practitioners of Chavutti Thirumol and learnt the massage in Kerala, but I've never experienced it. I would like to have a treatment first so that I could see for myself whether or not it would suit me and potentially my clients.

I know it is a massage given on the floor, using the feet instead of hands using a rope for support. I have given some massage with my feet and I should imagine with a bit of practice they would become very effective.

It is good that training is available in London - though I wouldn't mind a trip out to Kerala to learn it there.

I think you'd enjoy have a chavutti treatment. It a totally different experience.

It does take some getting used to the movements and moving your whole body like in a dance. Like anything with practice it's gets better.

I'm hoping to market this to new clients especially those involved with sports.

Thanks for moving the thread ! btw I would be very interested in hearing how Essence99 is getting on with attracting clients. I have really enjoyed receiving chavutti thirumal but my reservations about training in it are broadly those which Daisy has already expressed: ie that many people are reluctant to try anything new !
