Candida contraindicated?

Hi folks.

I've checked my books about candida on the skin and whether its contraindicated or not.

One book said to treat it like ring worm:
if its all over = total
if its in patches, cover them = local

Another book makes no mention of avoiding the affected areas and even goes so far as to say CHRONIC CANDIDIASIS INDICATES MASSAGE

any thoughts on this matter?

Just a quick thought on this. If you think about the areas of the skin is most likely to appear you wouldn't want to be massaging them anyway! A fungal infection of the toes is called athlete's foot. The infecting organism is completely different to ringworm which is a highly infectious "parasite" more along the lines of scabies.

Chronic candidiasis is most likely to manifest as digestive disturbance, lethargy, intolerances etc and is not contagious. Candida spores are present in the gut but environmental factors and medications can lead to overgrowth and hence symptoms.

If you think about how the causative organism grows and the environment in which it lives you have a closer answer than "treat as ringworm".

Sorry - don't mean to sound grouchy just trying to answer quickly before I go and clean the house before the olds get here.

Thanks Eathbabe, all makes sense and thank for rushing it in before cleaning.

Only thing is a I had a client in (who will be returning to me) and she said she has candida resulting rash on her thighs so I didnt massage thighs. I would like to clairfy before her next appointment if I can go there or not as she will really benifit from a full body massage.

Perhaps its just the way her skin is reacting to the candida...or would it actually be candida on the skin?

if she is saying that it has spread from the vaginal area then I would totally contraindicate her until she had seen her gp - I have not heard of it affecting the skin - off to consult the wonderful www

Hi again

As a nurse (pays the bills!) I've seen candida (thrush) under breasts and in groins as well as in the mouth. It is usually very painful in these areas especially if it has been left untreated and the skin is starting to slough off. Sorry to be graphic but it can be hideous. If it is on her thighs I'd also suspect it had spread from her groins/vagina and she needs to see her GP pronto. Usually this will clear with a course of clotrimazole, however sometimes oral fluconazole is given. If she is reluctant to go down the allopathic antifungal route I'd suggest a nutritional therapist to really sort out her digestive system and give her body's normal flora a chance to do it's thing properly and you may want to get advice from this therapist as to what would be most beneficial for her. If you feel happy to continue treating her you will have to avoid the area until things have improved/are under control.

I'd be surprised to see candida on the thighs alone as it likes nice warm skin crevices when it is external. If this is the case I'd ask her how she knows it is candida and how it is being treated. If she has "self-diagnosed" it is worth her getting a proper diagnosis to ensure this rash is being properly managed.
