Can instructors keep you from becoming licensed?

At my massage school, the 2 instructors are a married couple. They have bragged about former students who didn't like the way the way the instructors ran things, so they supposedly wrote to the state licensing board to keep these students from getting licensed and/or gave them negative job recommendations...Is this possible? Can they really do this?

Now that my class is nearing graduation, we are having some concerns of our own about the way things are being handled. Should we speak up or keep our mouths shut to make sure we don't jeapordize our futures as massage therapists?

I made a career change at age 40 thinking I was avoiding all this drama!

I have no idea what TN law is like, but I'm really sorry you are in school with these two as instructors! Isn't there anyone at the school that they answer to? Or are they owners?

I would hope that in any state it would not be possible for teachers to "have influence" with the boards to stop someone from becoming a therapist who had passed through all the hoops required by the state. While there is a small % of the time when that may be helpful for the profession, I think most of the time it would be dangerous, for exactly the reason you state.

But in my experiences with my state board, I have found that they are unreliable it can take longer to take care of my dealings if they (the individual folks working there) are having personal problems. It totally depends on who is signing the papers at the State Board. And even that can change from year to year.

I would say cover your butt. Maybe the state board and the schools are in perfect alignment and working well together (think ideal situation) and maybe they're not (let your imagination run wild). You don't know which is happening.

Get licensed. Then if you want to make complaints against your school, do so. Knowing your license is secure.

They aren't the owners. I get the impression that the owner has heard complaints along these lines before but these 2 are still there. I can't figure it out...

I don't know about the licensing issue. The instructors are probably (maybe) living in their own myth. If you've passed all of your tests, including the national (if that's required), I couldn't think it'd be a problem.

Also, if you can document the 'slamming' they're giving prospective businesses, can probably hit them a lawsuit. That is why human resources of companies are very, very cautious (even by saying if the employee is great). I think the only thing most can say is if they would hire you again or not.

Good luck with school and just get the heck out of there when you can!

Sounds like those "instructors" need a new line of work. Perhaps data entry would be appropriate... it would at least keep their hands off of the unsuspecting.

Graduate, get licensed, then review them.
