can i introduce a new kitten to my 6 year old cat?

I may be able to get a kitten soon and i was wondering if it would scare the cat i already own off. I used to have two cats but one of them now lives with a family up the road. I don't know why he left us but i really wouldn't want my other cat to go.Would owning a new kitten possibly do this?
Thank you. My cat is very gentle and is usually doesn't mind other cats in the garden so hopefully he ill adjust well.

How wonderful you must be looking forward to bringing your new Kitten home. I was believe me best day of my life. Now your question don't leave your cat and kitten on their own together until you know they accept each other. A stray cat in your garden is fine but one living in your house is another.

Maybe, don't show them to each other right away, it will overwhelm the kitten.
Also put him in 1 room for about 1 or two weeks, occasionally show him or her to the litter box. after the new cat is used to that then introduce them to each other. THey will be kind of mean to each other for a while.

Cats are territorial so when you bring in a new cat there's going to be an adjustment.

Don't leave a kitten alone with your older cat until they adjust to each other.

If you're worried about your older cat leaving I would keep them both inside until they have adjusted to each other (it can take a week to a few months)
