can hydrogen burn by itself without oxygen when a flame is introduced?

i read that when hydrogen burns it produces water, i.e it reacts with atmospheric oxygen to give water as by product, which is the material other than fossil fuel, and coal in which hydrogen is available in abundance, because then all engines and generators can run on hydrogen.

There are other processes that produce a flame that are not technically burning, and some of them do involve hydrogen with the right combination of other chemicals. But they are not technically burning.

Fuel burns, oxygen is what burns it.

It seems to be a general misconception regarding burning. Firstly, you need to know the meaning of word burning. "Burning" means, in general, reaction of any substance with oxygen unless it is specified like burning in chlorine, burning in nitrogen etc. When a flame is introduced, it will certainly be burning due to oxygen. So, it cannot burn when a flame is introduced without presence of oxygen. However, hydrogen can react with other gases to produce flames which you can consider as burning.

At sufficient temperature and pressure, hydrogen will fuse in a nuclear reaction, which might be called 'burning'. There is controversial evidence it can happen at lower temperatures and pressures ("cold fusion"). There is not so much hydrogen in coal, but the energy in coal can be used to take hydrogen out of water.
