Can anyone introduce some home defence method?

I am in Tasmania and I live about 4 or 5 km from Hobart centre.I want to join a gun club in order to meet the requirement to get a gun.Can anyone give me some suggestions about what kind of gun is suitable for me?And if there are any other method which are not related about guns please tell me.
ps:I am a woman so I can't do any heavy duty or something too dangerous.

If your going to go with firearms, the best one for home defense is a shotgun. ive been around and owned guns my whole life. my dad gave me a .22 rifle for my 12th birthday. shotguns are what all professionals recomend for home defense. but in the u.s., the odss of getting the wepon taken from and used against you are a little high. i dont know the exact number. so what that traslates to is if you ever have to pull a firearm on someone you have to be prepared to use it. seriously. just brandishing it may not work out well for you. but a shotgun is what you want.

Someone else here, I believe it was Gentlewolf, but I'm not sure, posted this website one time. It's pretty good. It's a gun site made by a woman for women, but it has good beginner info for guns.

I haven't looked at the whole site, but it at least gives you a lot of gun info. Consider alarms that go off when a window or door is opened, motion lights for outside, planting thorny bushes outside windows. Just make your home an unattractive target. As far as guns are concerned, I will recommend a shotgun. 20 gauges are good, but you can get reduced recoil ammo in a 12 gauge as well, plus recoil pads. I just like how common and varied 12 gauge ammo is.

A 12 gauge or 20 gauge shotgun. 20 gauge is better for a smaller person who can't manage recoil, but I urge you to go with the 12 gauge if you can handle it. 12 gauge is a bit more common for ammunition. 00 Buck is the typical self defense shotgun round. Shotguns are pretty cheaply priced compared to other guns. Other wise I recommend and large sized .38 special revolver with a rubber grip. I'm sure you'll learn what fits you best if you take a gun class. Goodluck.

I do not know if the Taurus "Judge" revolver is available in NZ. If you kiwi's can get that weapon, I'd reconend that without exception.
It's a solid home defense weapoin and fires a mix of .45 lc and /,410 rounds.
Federal and winchester have both developed specific rounds for the judge personal defense weapon.
Personally one or 2 rounds of #5 shot should discourage any intruder.
other alternatives? mace/pepper sprey, ...having a claymore mine mounted on your front door?
Seriously, any lethal weapon carries a big responsibility. and the moment you draw that revolver, and pull the trigger you have just exposed yourself to legal issues.
Make sure you know your legal rights and responsibilities.
Take a shooting course for self protection and use the weapon on a regular basis to know how to use it.
