We have a 1½ yr old female Golden Retriever. Obviously potty trained, and she is pretty well trained in obedience.
We will be getting an 8 week old male Golden Retriever, from the same parents, in about 2 weeks. We brought our female to the breeder so she could meet her little brother. That didn't go so well. I think the combination of a different house, different people, strange dogs, puppies with her master, etc kind of put her in a panic. She didn't do anything hostile, but you could tell she was scared/upset. Ignored the puppy and was trying to piece it all together.
Do you think she will act like that when we introduce the puppy to her in the safety of our home? She didn't act poorly to the puppy the first time around, but pretty much ignored him.
Maybe have my wife come in and calm her down, and then bring in the puppy later? We will have him in the kitchen like we did with our female, for quite a while. Maybe let them sniff each other through the gate? I don't know.
Edit: Whoops! Title should be *TWO.
Well she wasn't hostile. I mean, our female LOVES dogs. Every dog she sees outside she just wants to play with. Even if the dog is hostile to her, she wants to play with them.
I think the problem was that she didn't know where she was. She ignored the puppy and was trying to figure out the house she was in, who the people were (breeders), and why the dogs outside (parents) were barking at her.
