At what age should I introduce spanking/beatings in my discipline regiment for my 10

cathrl - I agree but he is starting to toss his food bowl on the floor and then laugh which makes me suspect he knows what he is doing. I don't want him to grow up thinking he can get away with anything - this is how society is filled with young criminals.

Wait until the baby is at least 12 months. Then he should be ready; by that age they know right from wrong and are doing "wrong" on purpose- keep that in mind. I agree with you- too many nice parents- I also think withholding food is excellent punishment, cages worked well when my son was 10 months old. You have to start somewhere.

Ok...this solved our problem...spank free.

When he tosses food or his bowl...be calm, diplomatic and firm and...take all the food off the tray and turn his chair around for about one minute.

Don't yell. Just say "no" in a firm voice (and learn to laugh inside). He will be kind of confused and trying to figure out what the hell happened! That's the ticket. The element of surprise. And not being part of the table talk. Just keep chatting and pretending it's no big deal with the others...ignore him.

Don't do this for too long but do it everytime. No matter how annoying to your meal. Trust me...it works. Then just turn him back like nothing happened, smile, say "welcome back" and put the food back.

Prepare to repeat.

Spank only when they are about to hurt themselves or cause serious injury to others. That's our belief. You can get away without it and still churn out a non-criminal.

If you end up spanking your child, it should be when they have done something deliberatly awful despite knowing full well that it was wrong and that there would be consequences. How on EARTH do you expect to know when that's going to happen for the first time?

I introduced spankings when my son was 10 or 11 months old. He would crawl to the water cooler, stand up, pull the water spout, and then look at me while water fell to the floor. I began by telling him, "NO" while moving his hand away. As soon as he reached to grab the spout again, I would again tell him, "NO" while pushing his hand away. Anytime he did it after that, I would tell him no, and then give him one slap on the back of his thigh.

He has not touched the water spout since he was 10 months old. He gets a spanking for touching the stove nobs, as well as the electrical chords under the computer desk. My son shows clear understanding of the commands "no" and "don't touch" and will listen maybe 8 or 9 out of 10 times. He is very healthy, very happy, very smart, and he loves his mommy and the world very much!

PS I am always mild tempered, never raising my voice to my son. I never give him more than one spanking at a time, and it never ever leaves a mark. I always take time to especially show him affection afterward.
