advice for a kayaking newbie?

i am an outdoors person and i want to start doing river trips. i need a kayak that i can load up with with a weeks worth of food and gear and just go, but i do not want to spend $2000 on some crazy kayak with a rudder and i do not want anything over 10 feet long, any advice on a certain kayak that would be best????? it needs to be a kayak that can carry me and my gear and still be functional in serious water, anddddddddddddd no i am not going to use a canoe because kayaks are way easier to control and you can do more in them.
